| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the mythological scene of the Abduction of Europa, showing the figure of Europa astride a bull (Zeus in disguise), her arm raised dramatically upward and drapery flowing behind her in dynamic motion. Radiating lines fan outward from the central group across the dark field, creating a sunburst composition of striking visual effect. The denomination ECU is inscribed in large raised letters across the upper portion of the field, with the date 1993 appearing in the lower exergual area. A small mint mark 'G' is present below the date. |

Issued as part of Spain's presidency of the European Council in 1993, this piece belongs to a wave of ECU-denominated collector issues that proliferated across Europe during the Maastricht Treaty period, when the ECU was still a basket currency rather than physical tender. None of these coins ever circulated as currency — the ECU existed only in electronic transfers and accounting ledgers until it was replaced by the euro in 1999.
