Obverse description Central field bears a Burgundian cross with a firesteel device at its center, superimposed over a stylized Dutch garden motif in the lower portion of the field. The cross arms are boldly rendered in the hammered style typical of late sixteenth-century Low Countries coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, interrupted by a rosette mint mark attributed to the Dordrecht mint. The inscription reads PHS · D : G · HISP Z · REX · COMES · HOL · identifying Philip II as King of Spain and Count of Holland.
