Obverse description Place name BATENBVRGVM (Batenburg) inscribed in three horizontal lines across the field, surrounded by a continuous wreath of laurel or olive branches encircling the entire design. The legend is rendered in bold Roman capitals characteristic of early seventeenth-century Low Countries coinage. The irregular flan and characteristic roughness of the surfaces are typical of hammered copper coinage of this period.
