| Reverse description | The reverse presents the heraldic arms of the Dutch Republic — a rampant lion on a quartered shield — surmounted by a royal crown with floral finials, and supported on either side by two rampant crowned lions. Below the shield, within an ornate foliate cartouche, appears the intertwined VOC monogram of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. The surrounding Latin legend reads CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT with the date 1740, translating as 'By concord, small things grow,' the celebrated motto of the Dutch Republic. The entire design is framed within a beaded border. |
