Additional information

Ludovico Trevisan — cardinal, condottiere, and Patriarch of Aquileia — held administrative authority over Bologna during the vacancy that followed Pius II's death in August 1464. The Sede Vacante coinage issued from Bologna in that interregnum was struck under his direct governance, not merely his patronage. Trevisan was one of the more militarily active princes of the Church, having personally commanded papal forces at the Battle of Anghiari's aftermath and against the Turks at sea.

The Bologna mint's right to strike gold during vacancies was a longstanding privilege, jealously maintained against Roman centralization.
