Obverse description Full-length figure of the Doge Francesco Foscari kneeling in supplication at right, receiving from Saint Mark — the patron of Venice — standing at left, a pennant-topped staff (vexillum); the inscription DVX appears vertically in the central field between the two figures. Saint Mark is depicted in long robes with a nimbus, presenting the standard as a symbol of temporal authority conferred upon the Doge. The surrounding legend names the Doge and invokes the patronage of Saint Mark. The design follows the long-established Venetian ducat tradition with refined hammered relief typical of the fifteenth-century Zecca.
