Vladislav I — also known as Vlaicu Vodă — issued these ducats during a reign defined by constant triangulation between Hungarian suzerainty and Ottoman pressure from the south. The "Type IIa" designation within the MBR series reflects die variations documented among a small surviving corpus; the reference number itself carries a "var" suffix precisely because the emission sequence for this ruler remains incompletely resolved among specialists. Wallachia's silver coinage of this period drew directly on Hungarian minting conventions, including weight standards, which explains the nomenclature despite the purely silver fabric.
