Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Paul II (Pietro Barbo), featuring a shield charged with a lion rampant, surmounted by the crossed Keys of Saint Peter tied with a cord, and topped by the papal tiara with three crowns. The arms are set within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend reads PAVLVS PP SECVNDVS, identifying the issuing pontiff, separated by decorative stops. The design is executed in the bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of mid-fifteenth-century Roman papal coinage.
