Additional information

Maria Theresia's Tyrolean ducats were struck at the Hall am Inn mint, one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the Habsburg territories, having produced coinage since the late fifteenth century. Hall held a particular significance for Tyrol's gold coinage because the Inn Valley trade routes made it a natural clearing point for commerce moving between Italy and the German lands.

The empress died in November 1780, making the 1779 strike the final year of this specific type. Collectors working the Eypeltauer reference will find meaningful distinctions across the sub-varieties documented as 186 through 186/9 — small but cataloged differences in die execution that accumulated across eleven years of production.
