Obverse description Central field dominated by an elaborate crowned royal cipher of Landgrave Louis VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt, composed of interlaced script initials rendered in a flowing Baroque calligraphic style. The monogram is surmounted by a princely crown with raised arches and ball finials. The design fills the field with decorative foliate scrollwork. The coin has a finely milled or grained border. No legend appears on the obverse.
