Louis VIII ruled Hesse-Darmstadt until his death in 1768, but the more consequential backdrop for this issue is the Seven Years' War, which had ended just months before the earliest possible date of this series. The war had devastated the Hessian treasury — Hesse-Darmstadt backed Austria against Prussia while its neighbor Hesse-Kassel took British subsidies and profited handsomely. The financial asymmetry between the two Hesses after 1763 was stark, making gold ducats from Darmstadt in this window considerably less common than comparable Kassel issues.
Schütz V#3133 documents only a narrow die range for the type.
