| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Margrave John Frederick occupying the central field, depicted with long flowing hair and lace cravat in the baroque portrait style typical of the late seventeenth century. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and costume. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust reading IO FRID D G MAR BRAND MAG PRUS ST POM CA, abbreviating the ruler's full titles as Margrave of Brandenburg, Grand Master of Prussia, and Duke of Pomerania. The coin's milled border frames the design. The overall composition is characteristic of German baroque gold coinage of the period. |

John Frederick ruled Brandenburg-Ansbach from 1667 until his death in 1686, presiding over a court that punched well above its weight culturally — he was a serious patron of music and brought significant Italian influence to the margraviate. The 1672 ducat falls within a period when the Franconian Hohenzollern lines were carefully managing their relationship with the main Brandenburg electoral branch, whose growing ambitions under the Great Elector Frederick William were reshaping the family's political priorities.
The .986 fineness conforms to the Reichsmünzordnung ducat standard, though the smaller Franconian mints frequently struggled with consistent planchet preparation at this weight class.
