| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Transylvania, surmounted by a princely crown with elaborate mantling and supporters on either side. The crowned shield displays the traditional Transylvanian heraldic elements including the eagle, sun and moon, and the seven fortresses. The peripheral legend reads MONETA NOVA AVREA TRANS: in Roman capitals, arranged around the coin's circumference. The die-struck devices show the bold, somewhat irregular relief characteristic of early eighteenth-century hammered gold coinage produced under Rákóczi's insurgent administration. |

Rákóczi struck these ducats to fund the War of Independence against the Habsburgs — a conflict he launched in 1703 after escaping imprisonment in Wiener Neustadt. The coinage served a practical military purpose: gold was universally negotiable, and Rákóczi needed foreign creditors and mercenaries who would not accept the copper libertás coins he was simultaneously flooding into domestic circulation.
The 1705 issues coincide with the Diet of Szécsény, where Rákóczi was formally elected ruling prince of the confederated Hungarian estates.
