Additional information

Frederick Charles von Schönborn held the sees of both Bamberg and Würzburg simultaneously from 1729, an accumulation of ecclesiastical territory that made him one of the most powerful prince-bishops in the Holy Roman Empire. His uncle Lothar Franz had held Bamberg before him, and the family treated these appointments as hereditary assets — which canonically they were not, but practically they were. The Schönborn grip on Franconian church politics during this period was sufficiently tight that contemporaries remarked on it with open resentment.

Ducats of this four-year window are tied to Frederick Charles's ambitious building program, with Würzburg's Residenz consuming extraordinary sums throughout the 1730s.
