Reverse description The reverse presents a decorative cartouche with ornamental scrollwork at the top and bottom, enclosing a rectangular tablet bearing the five-line inscription DVCATVS NOVVS EPI MONASTERIENSIS, identifying this piece as the new ducal coinage of the Bishop of Münster. The date 1638 is divided on either side of the cartouche, with 16 to the left and 38 to the right. The overall design is bold and legible, typical of the late Renaissance ecclesiastical hammered gold coinage of the Holy Roman Empire.
