Additional information

Ferdinand I struck ducats at Klagenfurt under his authority as Archduke of Austria and ruler of the Inner Austrian territories, a minting right he exercised aggressively across multiple provincial mints to fund the near-continuous military expenditure demanded by Ottoman pressure on the Hungarian frontier. By 1555, the year of the Augsburg Religious Peace, his treasury was simultaneously managing the costs of that political settlement and the ongoing defensive works along the Croatian border.

Hahn 103 is among the scarcer Klagenfurt ducat varieties of his reign. The Carinthian mint operated intermittently, and its output never approached the volume of the Joachimsthal or Hall facilities.
