| Additional information |
This ducat was struck specifically for the Danish West India and Guinea Company's trade operations, not for general circulation in Denmark proper. Christian V had granted the company its renewed charter in 1697, and coinage of this type was intended to facilitate commerce along the Guinea coast and in the Caribbean colonies — St. Thomas in particular was then a significant entrepôt in the Atlantic trade network, including the slave trade.
The 1699 date places it within two years of the king's death; Christian V died in August 1699 following a hunting accident at Grasten.
