Reverse description The celebrated rampant horse of Brunswick-Lüneburg leaping to the left, depicted in vigorous motion with forelegs raised, atop a ground line. Below the horse, the Roman date MDCCXLIX appears prominently, with the mintmaster's initial S beneath it, and the inscription EX AUR. HEGIN. in the lower exergue, indicating the gold source. The partial motto NVNQVAM RETRORSVM (Never Backwards) arcs around the upper field, serving as the dynastic device of the House of Welf.
