Basarab III "Laiotă cel Bătrân" held the Wallachian throne in one of the most fractured sequences of rule in the principality's history, losing and regaining power multiple times between 1473 and 1477 in contests involving Ottoman backing, Hungarian intervention, and Vlad III — who briefly retook Wallachia in late 1476 before his death that December. Coins attributable to Laiotă's first series are consequently rare survivals from an administration that existed in intervals rather than continuously.
