Angelo Roncalli was elected Pope in October 1958 at age 76, widely assumed to be a caretaker pontiff. By 1960 he had already convened the Second Vatican Council's preparatory commission, a move few saw coming. West German gold medal issues of this type were produced by private mints — primarily Münze München and associated houses — for the collector and devotional trade, carrying no legal tender status but struck to ducat weight standards rooted in centuries of German goldsmith convention.
The .980 fineness is notably purer than the traditional venetian ducat at .986, a marginal but deliberate distinction common to this series.
