Obverse description Central field bearing the ornate heraldic cartouche of the Republic of Obwalden, displaying the canton's coat of arms with elaborate decorative framing in period engraving style. A circular legend surrounds the device, reading MONETA REIP : SUBSYLVANIAE SUPERIORIS, rendered in Latin script. The cartouche is executed in a formal baroque heraldic manner consistent with Swiss cantonal coinage traditions of the period.

Additional information

Obwalden struck this ducat in 1886 as one of the last cantonal gold issues before Swiss federal coinage had fully displaced local monetary production. The Latin Monetary Union, which Switzerland joined in 1865, standardized silver and eventually curtailed the practical need for independent cantonal issues — yet Obwalden persisted in striking ducats well past the point of monetary utility, effectively producing them as prestige pieces and gifts rather than circulating currency.

Mintage was extremely small. The HMZ listing as 731a reflects a single confirmed variety, with no significant die variations documented.
