Obverse description Central ornate cartouche with scrolled foliate borders enclosing a six-line Latin inscription stating the denomination and issuing authority of the Canton of Obwalden, with the original date 1725 displayed in the lowermost line flanked by decorative cross ornaments. The inscription is rendered in bold roman lettering within the shaped shield-like frame. The milled border is clearly visible around the entire coin periphery. The overall design is characteristic of early 18th-century Swiss cantonal coinage, here restruck in 1886 by Louis Niederberger.
