Obverse description The municipal arms of Rostock occupy the central field, depicting a griffin passant to the left on a horizontally striped shield, the lower portion plain, all within an ornamental wreath of laurel branches. The circular Latin legend reads MONETA AVREA ROSTOCHIENSIS with the date 1796 and mintmaster initials IG, separated by a floral ornament. The engraving is executed in a precise late Baroque style characteristic of north German civic coinage.
