Obverse description The obverse features the Basel basilisk — a rampant dragon-like heraldic creature with spread wings, scaly body, and clawed feet — depicted in high relief at the center of the field, holding a small ornate cartouche or shield below its foreleg. The creature faces right with its head turned back toward the viewer, displaying characteristic heraldic vigor. A small floral rosette serves as a punctuation mark within the circular Latin legend surrounding the device. The legend DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace) runs along the full periphery, separated by the rosette stop, with the coin bordered by a finely executed toothed or milled rim.
