Obverse description The arms of Hamburg — a three-towered white castle with an open gate — are depicted at center, set within an ornamental wreath of two palm or laurel branches tied at the base. The mintmaster's initials IR appear below the castle at the foot of the wreath. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire composition, reading MONETA AUREA CIVITATIS HAMBURGENS, interrupted at the top by a small rosette or star ornament.
