Obverse description Central field occupied by the Saxon electoral helmet surmounting a divided shield bearing the crossed swords of the Electorate of Saxony, the whole rendered in the late Gothic heraldic style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Saxon coinage. The crested helmet is elaborately mantled with foliate scrollwork extending toward the coin's periphery. The date, split as '15' and '43', is incorporated into the field flanking the upper portion of the design. No surrounding legend is present, the date serving as the primary inscription.

Additional information

Issued during the joint reign of John Frederick the Magnanimous and his cousin Moritz, this small billon piece belongs to a politically combustible moment in Saxon history. The two rulers administered the Albertinian and Ernestine branches of the Wettin dynasty under an awkward shared arrangement that collapsed entirely when Moritz sided with Emperor Charles V during the Schmalkaldic War. By 1547, John Frederick had been captured at the Battle of Mühlberg and stripped of the electorate — transferred directly to Moritz as reward for his betrayal.
