Obverse description Central field displays the Brunswick lion passant to the left within a shield, depicted in low relief in the hammered style typical of early 17th-century German municipal coinage. The lion is shown with raised forepaw and detailed mane, set against a plain shield ground. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading MO NO BRUNS, abbreviating MONETA NOVA BRUNSVICENSIS (New Money of Brunswick). The overall flan is irregular and slightly concave, consistent with hand-struck production.
