Nuremberg's Dreier coinage of this period was struck under the authority of the city council, which jealously guarded its imperial minting privileges well into the seventeenth century. The city operated one of the most prolific municipal mints in the Holy Roman Empire, and its billon small change circulated extensively throughout Franconia and beyond — often far outside the city's own trading networks.
The thirteen-year span of this type reflects how rarely the city bothered to update its small denomination dies, a practical economy given the volumes involved.
