Artsakh — internationally recognized by virtually no one, but administratively functional for the ethnic Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh following the 1994 ceasefire — issued this aluminum coinage in 2004 as part of a definitive series, a quiet act of institutional normalcy for a state that existed in legal limbo. The coins saw limited practical circulation; the Armenian dram was the currency people actually used.
