Greece adopted the Latin Monetary Union framework in 1868, aligning its coinage with France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. This pattern was struck that year as part of deliberations over the subsidiary coinage series — copper-nickel was being evaluated as a cheaper alternative to silver for the smaller denominations. The LMU ultimately standardized silver for the 1-drachme denomination, making exploratory strikes in copper-nickel dead ends by treaty obligation rather than technical failure.
