Obverse description Crowned and armoured right-facing bust of James VI, depicted wearing elaborately engraved plate armour with a ruff collar and a jewelled royal crown. The effigy is rendered in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of early Stuart hammered gold coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the portrait, with the Latin royal legend disposed around the periphery between stops.
