Additional information

Victor Amadeus III spent much of his reign trying to keep Piedmont-Sardinia solvent and politically independent between Bourbon France and Habsburg Austria — a balance that collapsed entirely when Revolutionary France invaded in 1796, the final year of this coin's production. The Doppia was the traditional gold unit of Savoy, a denomination with roots stretching back centuries in the House of Savoy's monetary system.

That terminal date of 1796 is meaningful. The Treaty of Paris forced Victor Amadeus to cede Savoy and Nice to France, and he abdicated the following year. Coins struck in the final years of this run were produced under a government already unraveling.
