Additional information

Emanuele Filiberto issued the doppia as part of a deliberate monetary restructuring following his recovery of Piedmont from French occupation — the 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis had restored Savoy's territories after decades of subjugation, and establishing a credible gold coinage was inseparable from reasserting ducal authority. The mint at Turin, reestablished under his direction, produced this denomination to compete directly with the Venetian ducat and Florentine florin in Alpine and north Italian trade circuits.

Filiberto died in 1580, making the closing date of this issue coincide with the final year of his reign.
