Additional information

Struck during the sede vacante following the death of Clement XI in March 1721, this doppia was issued under the authority of Cardinal Camerlengo Annibale Albani — a nephew of the deceased pope. The Camerlengo held the unique constitutional role of governing the Church's temporal affairs during the interregnum, including the right to strike coinage bearing his own arms rather than a reigning pontiff's.

The conclave that followed lasted only fifteen days, electing Innocent XIII on May 8. Short interregnums typically meant limited doppia output, which accounts for the low survival rate of this type in any grade.
