| Obverse description | Elaborate papal coat of arms of Alexander VIII (Pietro Ottoboni) prominently centered in the field, featuring a shield charged with a displayed double-headed eagle above a diagonal band, flanked by ornate acanthus scrollwork and palm fronds. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, rendered in fine Baroque relief. The circular Latin legend reads PONT MAX ALEXAN VIII, separated by small dots, running along the raised inner border, with the coin's edge exhibiting a milled or reeded rim. |

| Additional information |
Alexander VIII — Pietro Ottoboni — was elected in 1689 at the age of seventy-nine, and his pontificate lasted barely two years. Despite that brevity, he managed to alienate Louis XIV, reverse several of Innocent XI's anti-nepotism measures almost immediately, and stuff his Venetian relatives into every available curial office. The Doppia was the prestige gold issue of the papal mints, and the 1690 date places this squarely in the single full calendar year of his reign.
