Obverse description Central papal coat of arms of Alexander VII (Chigi family), quartered shield displaying the characteristic hills and oak tree motifs, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of St. Peter, all within a decorative mantle with tasselled cords. The papal arms are rendered in fine relief in the baroque style typical of mid-17th century Italian coinage. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads ALEXANDER VII P M, separated by a dot, running along the inner border of the milled rim.
