Palau's Marine Life Protection series, launched in 1992, predates the nation's formal establishment of its national marine sanctuary system, which would later protect over 600,000 square kilometers of Pacific Ocean. These platinum essais were produced as trial strikes — submitted to verify die quality and planchet specifications before committing to a full production run — and were never released for general circulation. Surviving examples are essentially mint documentation artifacts. The .999 fine platinum specification places this issue among the earliest platinum essais struck for a Pacific island nation.
