Additional information

The Walhalla memorial near Regensburg, Bavaria, was commissioned by Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and completed in 1842 — a deliberate political project to construct a German national identity through the veneration of Germanic heroes. Arminius, the Cherusci chieftain who destroyed three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD, was central to that invented tradition, having been rehabilitated by 19th-century German nationalism into a founding-father figure he never historically represented.

Palau's prolific commemorative program has issued hundreds of such themed pieces; this is a numismatic souvenir rather than a circulating coin, produced for the collector market with no meaningful connection to Palauan monetary history.
