Somalia's nominal coin issues of this period were produced entirely for the collector market — the country had no functioning central bank capable of authorizing or distributing circulating coinage through most of the 2000s. These geometric novelty dollars were struck by private minting houses under licensing arrangements, a practice that attracted regulatory scrutiny in several European markets during the early 2010s.

The sphere format required custom dies and a multi-part striking process not used in standard coin production.
