Obverse description Draped and crowned effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, in the Young Head portrait style engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon. The legend VICTORIA appears along the upper periphery and QUEEN along the lower periphery, separated by decorative stops. The border consists of an ornate repeating geometric meander or key-fret pattern of Chinese inspiration, giving the coin a distinctly Eastern character. The field is smooth, with the portrait rendered in fine relief typical of mid-Victorian die work.
