Reverse description Trial strike die test piece with all inscriptions rendered in retrograde (mirror-image) relief across the coin's face. The date 1864 appears prominently in the centre of the field, also reversed. The circular legend HONG KONG MINT surrounds the upper portion, while .CHINA. is positioned at the lower periphery, all lettering mirrored. The plain, unadorned field and sharp retrograde lettering confirm this as a die or hub trial striking, produced to test the engraved dies prior to production of the regular coinage.
