Liberia's commemorative dollar program of the late 1990s was operated largely through licensing arrangements with foreign distributors, meaning most pieces in this series — including this one — were struck outside Liberia and never saw domestic circulation. The wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones took place on 19 June 1999 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, a deliberately low-key affair compared to earlier royal weddings, with a guest list under 550.
Edward was granted the Earldom of Wessex on the day of the wedding.
