Stefan Bellof remains the only driver ever to have lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under six minutes, setting a 6:11.13 qualifying lap in a Porsche 956 at the 1983 1000km race — a record that stood for 35 years. He died at Spa-Francorchamps in 1985 during a reckless overtaking attempt on Jacky Ickx, aged 27. Liberia's commemorative dollar program of the early 2000s swept up dozens of motorsport subjects, producing issues that circulated in name only.
