Reverse description A soaring bald eagle in full flight is depicted at center, wings broadly spread, its head turned to the left, engraved by Thomas D. Rogers. Seventeen stars, representing the number of states at the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, encircle the design along the inner border. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in three lines in the upper left field, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim. The engraver's initials TDR appear in small letters to the lower right of the eagle.
