Moorea has no independent monetary authority — this piece was issued under a private licensing arrangement, one of many "fantasy" or collector-driven emissions attributed to French Polynesian localities that hold no official minting mandate. France's overseas collectivities operate under the French franc and later the CFP franc, leaving no legal framework under which Moorea could authorize circulating coinage. The orca habitat in French Polynesian waters is itself a stretch; Orcinus orca sightings in the Society Islands are rare and largely transient.
