Obverse description The obverse bears the portrait of Sacagawea (c. 1788–1812), the Shoshone interpreter and guide of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, depicted in right-facing profile with her infant son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau secured to her back in a traditional cradleboard. The effigy was designed by Glenna Goodacre and has appeared on all Sacagawea and Native American dollars since 2000. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while IN GOD WE TRUST appears in the left field, and the designer's initials GG are incuse below the portrait. The date, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto are inscribed on the edge rather than the obverse face.
