Obverse description The obverse features the iconic effigy of Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, rendered in three-quarter right-facing portrait by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. She is depicted with her hair drawn back and wearing traditional dress, with her infant son Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau carried in a cradleboard on her back. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines to the left of the effigy. The engraver's initials GG are incused at the lower rim.
