Obverse description The obverse bears the effigy of Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide and interpreter of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, depicted in three-quarter bust facing right, her hair drawn back and secured, wearing a draped garment with decorative fringe visible at the shoulder. Her infant son, Jean Baptiste, is carried on her back, his head visible in the lower left field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines to the left of the figure. The engraver's initials GG appear incuse near the base of the design.
