Obverse description Central field features a finely detailed relief of a mermaid figure rising from stylized ocean waves, her upper body rendered in naturalistic form with long flowing hair, her lower body tapering into a scaled fish tail. Behind her, the diagonal spar and rigging of a sailing vessel extend across the upper right portion of the field, evoking the maritime heritage of the Pacific. The denomination '1$' appears to the lower left of the central device. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF PALAU' curves along the upper periphery and '2001' along the right, all within a beaded border.

Additional information

Palau began issuing its marine life dollar series in 1994, shortly after gaining independence and establishing the U.S. dollar as its official currency — these collector pieces were a deliberate revenue mechanism for the young government, struck under license rather than at a Palauan facility. The Moorish idol entry in the series dates to 2001, by which point the program had expanded well beyond its original scope.

KM#62 was struck at the B.H. Mayer Mint in Germany.
