| Obverse description | Facing portrait of Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States, rendered in high relief with characteristic flowing side hair and period cravat. The legend MARTIN VAN BUREN curves along the upper periphery, while the inscriptions 8th PRESIDENT and the presidential term dates 1837-1841 appear along the lower border. The engravers' initials JI and PH are visible in the lower field beneath the portrait. The design was sculpted by Joel Iskowitz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill. |
